What was your apprenticeship and when did you start?
I commenced a Business Administration NVQ Level 2 Apprenticeship within the governance and risk management department (now known as the central patient safety and quality department) in September 2008. The course was 12 months long, with the option to complete earlier.
Tell us more about what’s involved in an apprenticeship?
I was essentially employed full-time by the trust; however the course was run by Hertford Regional College (HRC) at the time. I had a direct line manager within the governance and risk management team, as well as a key contact within the training and development team who provided additional support if/when required. I had regular visits from my HRC NVQ assessor who would discuss and agree an assessment plan with me every couple of weeks, and request evidence that allocated tasks had been completed. They would also speak to my colleagues within the department, and meet with my line manager to sign off the evidence.
At the end of the apprenticeship, the course work and evidence I had collated throughout the course was assessed by a HRC internal verifier and a certified was issued.
Why did you decide to start and apprenticeship?
At the time I had just turned 18 years old. I worked in retail, which I enjoyed, but knew I didn’t want to do it long-term. I started looking for a new career path and applied for a variety of office based jobs in and around Harlow. I was sadly unsuccessful due to lack of desired experience. Having no previous experience within an office environment also made it difficult to get my foot in the door. That’s when I decided the best way to get myself into office based work was to apply for an apprenticeship.
What did you enjoy most about the apprenticeship and why?
I enjoyed being included in the team, and treated the same as any other team member, whilst gaining experience and qualifications.
How do you think an apprenticeship has improved or opened up your career options?
I truly believe I would not be where I am now if I had not made the decision do an apprenticeship. At the time apprenticeships were up and coming, so there weren’t many around. Employers often ask for previous experience as essential criteria, which can hinder progression when attempting to change careers, especially at such a young age!
Can you tell us some more about your career progression at PAHT?
Initially, my plan was to come to PAHT, complete my apprenticeship and move on - that was 12 years ago!
After completing my apprenticeship I was offered a substantive full time post as band 3 compliance administration assistant. I also went on to complete my NVQ level 3, again commissioned by HRC.
I worked with the central patient safety and quality team for a further 7 years, in numerous roles, gaining valuable and specialised experience. With increased experience I was able to apply for different roles at increased bands (with some side steps along the way!). I eventually left the central patient safety and quality team in January 2017 to join the medicine healthcare group patient safety and quality team on a nine month band 7 development programme. I have been with the medicine PS&Q team for over 3 years now.
What advice would you give to other people considering starting an apprenticeship?
If you’re struggling to get into a specific career path, it is definitely worth considering.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?
Hopefully working within the walls of a brand new hospital build!
Right now I am happy where I am in life and in my career. I enjoy my job and those I work with – however, 10 years is a long time so who knows.
