How did you find out about the apprenticeship

My mum was actually the one that came up with the idea of me doing an apprenticeship, it wasn’t anything that I had thought about doing. I was working as a receptionist at the time at a leisure centre and always thought that office work was something I could see myself doing, my mum sent me a link to a business administration apprenticeship role for the Quality First team and it seemed like something I would be interested in so I went for it. I always wanted to work in a place that was interesting and wasn’t just your usual office environment and the NHS seemed like the perfect place.

What type of things did you do whilst on your apprenticeship

The main jobs that I completed while on my apprenticeship were, setting up meetings and finding venues for them, taking minutes, coordinating the team’s calendars, helping organise the team events, greeting and welcoming any one that came into the office, designing the teams monthly newsletter and any posters and helping with the facilitation of workshops and meetings. While doing these jobs I was also completing my NVQ qualification in business administration.

What did you enjoy the most?

The thing I enjoyed the most during my apprenticeship was working with the team, they helped open up so many opportunities for me during my apprenticeship, by introducing me to different people around the hospital and by pushing me out of my comfort zone to increase my skills and knowledge. I also enjoyed knowing that I was helping patients in a small way, as although I am not clinical and directly working with the patients, with the meetings and workshops I was setting up and joining they were working towards improving patient care.

What happened at the end of your apprenticeship?

After I completed my apprenticeship, I was offered a substantive role within the team which I took. I am now working through the Edward Jenner programme to work towards my leadership skills, to further my professional development which will hopefully open up some doors for me in the future.

What would be your top tips for others considering an apprenticeship?

My top tips would be, if you are thinking about doing an apprenticeship then go for it, for me personally I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after I left sixth form, so it was the perfect opportunity to try out a job role while gaining a qualification. I would also say if you haven’t found an apprenticeship yet, think about a job you have seen and always wondered what it would be like to do and then search for that job role as most job roles and companies offer apprenticeships and you may find a job you love.
