Inspiring our workforce of tomorrow. Over 160 students attended our new look 'Future Heroes' health and care career event on 7th February

The dust is only just settling on the fantastic Herts and West Essex Health and Care Academy’s annual careers event where more than 160 local students learnt about life as a health professional.

Held last Wednesday (7 February) at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, the free event showcased careers in social care, primary care, pathology, nursing, allied health professionals (AHPs), midwifery, healthcare science, pharmacy, medicine, mental health, library services, artificial intelligence (AI) and innovation.

With 10 schools from Hertfordshire and west Essex attending the event, the space was bustling with young people meeting colleagues from our area’s different provider trusts. Their stalls had an array of interactive equipment on hand to explain what their job can involve, helping the visitors to consider different career options as they plan their futures.

This year our ambulance service colleagues not only took an ambulance along with them for students to explore, but they also taught the valuable skill of CPR. Plus, there were work experience, education and apprenticeships, and recruitment teams on hand to give guidance on next steps. North Herts College, course tutors from the university also took part, and Hertfordshire County Council and Communities 1st were also available to speak about volunteering programmes.

The event entered a new era this year, ushered in with a different location, a new name, and an afternoon drop-in session for the public to learn more about health and care careers in our area - a slot which attracted dozens of people including uni students and their families.

Event organiser Niki Galvin, the Academy's Engagement Officer, said: “I would personally like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended and supported this year’s event. Yes, it’s hard work but the buzz and the atmosphere, and the opportunity it gives our colleagues and students, puts the biggest smile on my face.”

Thank you so much for the opportunity to represent library careers with you at the event.  It was a lot of fun and very productive.  We had really engaging and interesting discussions with students, staff, and educators.  It was such a lovely opportunity for us to go around the other stalls and speak to other contributors too, and get lots of ideas for engagement and promotions. Niki, you did such a great job of organising everything

The event was held during National Apprenticeship Week, one of our stalls was supported by Emily Frost who has just completed an exciting cross-sector Pre-Registration Pharmacy Technician apprenticeship through East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust, Hertfordshire Community Trust and our ICB.
